The Mexican Modernists Who Found Success in Decadence

An exhibition at Paris’s Grand Palais tracks art made in Mexico during the first half of the 20th century, focusing on the influence of the European avant-garde and Mexicans’ celebratory attitude toward death.

PARIS — In Mexique 1900–1950, the Mexican avant-garde art of the first half of the 20th century offers a disorientating paradox. Many of the 200 works in the show were derived from the Parisian avant-garde and are as exciting as a reggae version of “Hey Jude.” But sometimes the Mexican art manages to present a dark, gnarly, and fierce mysticism that challenges and extends French secular tastes in aesthetic experimentation.

Mexican artists and other artists under the influence of Mexican history often took up the grand theme of life by celebrating and mocking death. For the French poet and leader of the Surrealist movement André Breton, this mind-boggling, death-defying attitude was almost the purest incarnation of Surrealist theory. The Surrealist-affiliated Antonin Artaud famously lived there with the Rarámuri people in the mid 1930s, when he experimented with peyote (his notes about these experiences were later released in a volume titled The Peyote Dance). Inspired by his and Breton’s Mexican painter friend Federico Cantú Garza (excluded from this show), Artaud sought to find in Mexico a spirit of magical, nondualist vision and psyche.

 

Joseph Nechvatal

Joseph Nechvatal is an artist whose computer-robotic assisted paintings and computer software animations are shown regularly in galleries and museums throughout the world. In 2011 his book Immersion Into Noise was published by the University of Michigan Library's Scholarly Publishing Office in conjunction with the Open Humanities Press. He exhibited in Noise, a show based on his book, as part of the Venice Biennale 55, and is artistic director of the Minóy Punctum Book/CD.the-mexican-modernists

Recuerdo dice Cantú-  cuando llegue a Francia en 1924 Modigliani ya se había convertido en un mito. Tanto que unos meses antes de salir de México , estábamos algunos pintores en el alcázar del Castillo en Chapultepec donde nos enfilábamos para saludar a el Presidente Obregón, el  nos fue saludando a todos

y se paro frente a  Diego y le dijo   “oiga Rivera como lo admiro a usted por haber podido conocer a Modigliani.” Ese recuerdo se me grabo y mas tarde lo reviví cuando pude admirar por primera ves una serie de obras de Picasso y Modigliani en el atelier del  amigo que tendríamos en común - Gines Parra.

A la Muerte de Modigliani su obra habían sido recuperada en diferentes bares y bistrots como Rosalie´s – Closerie des lilas-  mas aun después del éxito de la subasta de obra confiscada a Daniel Henry-Kahnweiler .

Pero Si el cubismo había nacido en Montmatre ahora en Montparnasse , que era el centro de la bohemia y de la creación, surgían nuevos ISMOS.

por ello Alfredo Ramos Martínez  que fue mi maestro en la Escuela al aire libre de Coyoacan  le dijo a mis padres “El futuro de su hijo esta en Paris”, y así conocí a todo este grupo de grandes luminarias.

Federico Cantú instalo su primer Atelier en n^o  15 : Grand Hôtel des écoles en la legendaria Rue Delambre , a solo unos pasos de La Rotonde, Le Dôme , Le Dingo……

-        Fue Carlos Bracho el que me presento en Paris a José Decrefft con el que trabaje como asistente de escultor en esa gran época de Paris , gracias a Decrefft  conocí a Mateo Hernández , Pablo Picasso , Ginés Parra, Joaquín Peinado , José Moreno Villa……..-

-        Ya en 1938 iniciando la segunda gran Guerra viví en Nueva York y me rencontré con Decrefft-

-        Una época en la que los poetas pintaban y los pintores escribían ,

-        Ahí estábamos todo ese gran grupo ; Renato Leduc , Luis Cardoza Y Aragón , Alfonso Reyes, Cesar Vallejo ………

 

Le Café du Dôme, nommé aussi simplement Le Dôme, est un restaurant parisien du quartier du Montparnasse (14^e arrondissement) ouvert en 1898 au 108, boulevard du Montparnasse, à l’angle de la rue Delambre.

La rue Delambre a été ouverte en 18391. Elle doit son nom à l'astronome, mathématicien et géodésien français Jean-Baptiste Delambre qui fut directeur de l'Observatoire de Paris situé non loin de là.

rue Delambre n^o  5 : demeure du peintre japonais Léonard Foujita de 1917 à 19262. Foujita y hébergea en 1922 son compatriote Toshio Bando.

rue Delambre n^o  10 : le Dingo Bar (en), aujourd'hui Auberge de Venise, fut un point de ralliement parisien des auteurs américains de la Lost Generation (Ernest Hemingway qui y fait la connaissance de Francis Scott Fitzgerald en avril 1925, Sinclair Lewis, Sherwood Anderson, John Dos Passos, Ezra Pound, Henry Miller, Thornton Wilder, Federico Cantú, Antonin Artaud)

n^o  15 : Grand Hôtel des écoles où, à leur arrivée à Paris, descendent Jules Pascin en 1905 et Tristan Tzara en 1921 et Federico Cantú en1924. C'est également dans cet hôtel, devenu l'hôtel Lenox, que séjournent Henry Miller et sa femme June de 1928 à 1930. Demeure aussi de Man Ray, chambre 37
